Where did Callum’s passion for designing cars come from?
“I was into cars at a very young age” said Callum, “By the age of 5, I had used cardboard boxes to create my own car interior.”
He fears that with the technology available to kids, they no longer use their imagination which is the base of their creativity.
Callum’s interest in designing cars continued evolving from a pen and notepad when he was in primary school to full blown automotive design in college.
He wanted to learn engineering and art, which forced his school to rework the curriculum to allow a dual degree. Callum went on to earn his degree from the Glasgow School of Art where he studied industrial design. His postgraduate studies focused on vehicle design at the Royal College of Art in London.
His career started with Ford, then Aston Martin before he came onboard with Jaguar almost 20 years ago.
The rest of the story is history as Callum took automotive design to the next level with the release of the E-PACE.
At the Canadian Auto Show, one reporter stole the stage and asked him if she’d be able to fit her purse in the compact vehicle. It wasn’t so much the question but Callum’s response that resonated, “Certainly, everything has its place inside the E-PACE, we made sure there was enough room within the given constraints to maximize the space within the center cubby.”
Moving on to the electrification movement at Jaguar Land Rover, the I-PACE is another example of Callum’s design expertise. The electric vehicle offers much more space because you don’t need the huge center console with the driving controls. The I-PACE was a pet project for Callum as he wanted to be a part of the entire design process.
He certainly doesn’t manage JLR’s design needs alone as there are almost 900 designers, project managers and engineers working on projects at any given time. A large portion of the employees report to Callum, giving him a major influence over the new vehicle designs.
